Gyrocopter Lands on Capitol Lawn- Pilot in Custody (video)

According to Fox news,  a gyrocopter landed on the Capitol lawn Wednesday afternoon, which prompted nearby streets to be locked down. The small aircraft was piloted by one person, who was immediately taken into custody.

The pilot of the small aircraft was reportedly a Florida mailman named Doug Hughes, who landed it as a political stunt to draw attention to campaign finance reform. He stated that he wanted to “send a message to every member of Congress.”

“I’m demanding reform and declaring a voter’s rebellion in a manner consistent with Jefferson’s description of rights in the Declaration of Independence. As a member of Congress, you have three options. 1. You may pretend corruption does not exist. 2. You may pretend to oppose corruption while you sabotage reform. 3. You may actively participate in real reform.” Doug Hughes, of Ruskin, Florida

The Tampa Bay Times reports that the mailman’s friend, Mike Shanahan, said he warned a Secret Service agent about the proposed landing, but they stated they had no information. “He’s a patriot, not a suicide bomber.”

“I was scared to death they were going to kill him. My thanks goes out to whomever it was who decided not to pull the trigger.” Michael Shanahan
