Secret Service Director Retires (Again)

After a series of scandals involving the Secret Service, Director Joseph Clancy was dragged out of retirement to once again lead the Treasury Department Agency in 2014. But as of March 4, he’s going to try and retire again.

Fox reported,

House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, whose committee probed various Secret Service controversies under the last administration, also praised Clancy for his service.

“He took on the difficult task of returning to and taking over an agency plagued with mismanagement, misconduct, and security lapses,” Chaffetz said in a statement.

The departure means that President Trump will now be able to pick the person he wants to lead the agency tasked with protecting him and his family among others.

Chaffetz urged Trump to “appoint a director from outside the agency,” saying: “A fresh set of eyes and new perspective is needed to restore the prestige and status expected of such an elite agency.”

Mr. Clancy joined the Secret Service in the 1980s.

During his work on the presidential protection details he was able to achieve a close bond with President Barack Obama, and was well regarded by the Obama administration. Clancy was part of the Secret Service protective detail that jogged with President Bill Clinton in the early days of the his presidency.

Clancy was appointed as acting director following the resignation of Julia Pierson on October 1, 2014, a position he held until his appointment as director on February 18, 2015 by President Obama. Wikipedia

Having someone that had a “close bond” with President Obama is likely not the best situation for President Trump. This will be a welcome change, and it is hoped that he picks someone who doesn’t have to resign quickly.
