Soldier Severely Beaten After Mummers Parade

Austin Freni, 19, came home to meet up with his Mom and girlfriend before being deployed  in a couple of months. But after they went to the annual Mummers Parade in Philadelphia, a gang accosted him and beat him severely. Now instead of deployment, he will have a long recovery ahead of him.

As Austin, his Mom, and girlfriend were walking on the street after the parade, a gang of 10-15 men started making remarks about his Army jacket.

Fox 29 reported,

“Group of 10-15 guys walked by me (making) derogatory comments towards Austin’s Army jacket,” she explained.

Then she says one of the young men struck Austin before others piled on.

“Me and his girlfriend tried pulling them off and they hit us . We got hit in the face. She got thrown in the street,” his mom explained  “He’s got to get plates put in his jaw and his mouth will be wired shut for the next eight weeks.”

Freni was supposed to go back to Fort Benning, Georgia after the holidays and await deployment to the Middle East in less than two months.

His mom, Lori Freni, had struggled to raise money for the airfare from Georgia to Philadelphia, and was planning to sell her things to get the ticket. But a stranger, Jennifer Richardson, the mother of a US Marine, bought the airline ticket outright after running across the Lori’s GoFundMe page. Austin’s Dad passed away from cancer two years before, and Lori lost her job due to a disability. Times were tough for them, now this.

The South Detective Division of the Philadelphia Police Department is investigating this aggravated assault.

“Austin’s in rough shape. He’s pretty banged up…He’s such a good kid. He did not deserve this.” Lori Freni
