White Officer Charged with Murder of Unarmed Black man in SC (video)
Police officer Michael Slager, 33, shot 50 year old Walter Scott in North Charleston, SC on April 4. He has since been fired after a police review of the video taken of him revealed what appears to be him shooting an unarmed man in the back as he was running away. He was also charged with murder.
In a press conference on April 8, North Charleston Police Chief Eddie Driggers and Mayor Keith Summey advised reporters that Michael Slager was terminated from the police force and is being charged with murder. He had been on the rolls of the North Charleston Police for slightly over 5 years.
Slager is currently in custody until or if the circuit court sets a bail amount. A hearing date has not been set.
His wife is currently 8 months pregnant, so the city agreed to continue to pay her medical costs until the baby is born.
About 45 protesters showed up just before the press conference, demanding that the Mayor resign, and at least one man who was sporting a #BlackLivesMatter T-shirt. “The Mayor’s got to go!” they chanted as he finished the press conference. During the event they repeatedly disrupted it by shouting “No Justice! No peace!”
Despite the protesters, it is unclear if race had anything to do with the incident.
Scott was originally pulled over for a broken taillight. When the officer ran his name, Scott was wanted on a warrant for nonpayment of child support. Slager attempted to take him into custody. That’s when things got ugly. A video of the incident was taken by someone nearby.
The officer claimed that Scott tried to take his taser, so he opened fire because he was “afraid for his life.” There is one point in the video that shows the taser electrodes between Slager and Scott, but the fact remains that Scott is running AWAY from the officer.
The police chief was asked if CPR was performed on Scott.
“I have watched the video and I was sickened by what I saw. And I have not watched it since, but … in the end of it, what I saw was (what I) believed to be a police officer removing the shirt of the individual and performing some type of life-saving (procedure), but I’m not sure what took place there.”
The City has now ordered enough body cameras so that every officer will have one.
The Mayor, the Police Chief, and a department Chaplain have visited the Scott family, whom they say are suffering.
The video is damning. 8 shots as a man is running away from the officer is disturbing. Whether or not Slager performed CPR would be irrelevant. Police officers are trained to use lethal force.
